How To Make An All Natural Bug Repellent Bar

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

If you are anything like me, and are a magnet for bugs in the summer, then you know the importance of a good bug repellent. The problem is there are not a ton of natural bug repellents out there are on the market currently that actually work. This lead to me creating my own and I have come up with a recipe that I am really happy with that I want to share with you:)

This recipe not only helps keep the bugs away but it will also moisturize your skin as well!

For this recipe you will need:

Melting pot or double boiler

To make:

  1. Combine shea butter, beeswax and coconut oil in melting pot and heat over low heat until completely melted. All of these ingredients are natural and nourishing for your skin.

  2. Add in your essential oils. All of these oils were chosen for their bug repellent properties. Citronella is a great all purpose repellent. Lemongrass works especially well for flying insects while peppermint is great for ants. Lavender is another great all purpose repellent as well as it soothes the skin and helps marry all the scents together.

  3. Stir thoroughly to combine and then pour into your silicone mold(s)

  4. This recipe makes 3 1.7oz bars. Once your bars have cooled completely(2-4 hours), you can remove them from the mold. Store in a cool dry location.

For most effectiveness, reapply every 2 hours. I hope you give this recipe a try and love it as much as I do!
