Easy DIY Menthol Chest Rub

With the Fall and Winter months comes things like, sore throats, stuffy heads and chest and all the other buggies and germs that come from being closed indoors with our fellow humans.

I recently tried out an amazing menthol chest rub that I received in my monthly Simply Earth Recipe Box. If you haven't heard of Simply Earth they are an essential oil company that makes high quality, pure essential oils at an affordable price. They offer monthly recipe boxes to help you build up your oil supply and learn different ways you can use your oils in your every day life. Each box comes with 4 oils, 3 singles and a blend, along with 6 recipes and ingredients to make the recipes. You also get something cold the big bonus box when you purchase your first box that has additional ingredients and supplies to help you use your oils. I think these boxes are great for beginner and experienced oil users and have really enjoyed getting them each month. Now back to the chest rub. This rub is super simple to make and I have found it to be every bit as effective if not more than the chest rubs you can purchase at the store AND it doesn't have any questionable ingredients in it.

For this recipe you will need:

1 tsp isopropyl alcohol

To make:

  1. Add your coconut oil, beeswax and sweet almond oil to your melting pot and heat over low heat until completely melted.

  2. While your other ingredients are melting, add your 1/2 tsp menthol crystals and 1 tsp of isopropyl alcohol to a microwave safe container and heat for 10 to 15 seconds. This will help your menthol crystals dissolve so they can be evenly dispersed through your chest rub. The isopropyl alcohol will evaporate out of the rub.

  3. Once your rub base has melted, remove from heat and in your menthol crystal mixture and essential oils and stir thoroughly to combine.

  4. Next pour into a 4oz airtight container and allow to cool for 2-4 hours.

  5. Once cooled, your chest rub is ready to use.

To use:

Place a small amount of the chest rub on your fingertips and apply to your chest. As you breathe in the rub, it will start to help with any congestion you may be feeling. Be sure to wash your hands after applying as the menthol can be irritating if you were to touch your eyes or mouth after applying the rub. Store the rub in a cool dry location when not in use. This rub has a shelf life of approximately 1 year.
