Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh Using Essential Oils

Updated: Jul 13, 2021

There are a lot of things in our homes each day that can leave it not smelling it's best. Pets, Kids, those leftovers that stayed in the fridge to long to name just a few. A stinky home is not the first impression that anyone wants to make when they are having company over that's for sure:) Today I am going to share four natural ways you can combat odors and leave your home smelling fresh using essential oils instead of one of the many synthetic options out there.

  1. First we will focus on the dreaded trash can. This is definitely an area that can start smelling bad very quickly. One way to keep those odors at bay is to take a cotton ball or round, place 2-4 drops of essential oil on it and toss it into the bottom of your trash can. Citrus Oils are a great to use as they have a strong scent and help to purify the air.

  2. Fabrics on our couches and curtains can hold onto odors and often need to be refreshed. To do this I like to make a quick linen spray using distilled water, witch hazel and essential oils. I change the oils I use for this spray up based on the season. I tend to stay more with citrus oils like lemon, orange, grapefruit & tangerine during the spring & summer months and go for warmer oils like Thieves, Cinnamon, Clove and Nutmeg in the cooler months. I do a separate spray of Lavender & Cedarwood in my bedroom as it not only helps keep my room smelling fresh but also helps with sleep support. Here is a link to a post on how to make this linen spray.

  1. As with other fabric surfaces your rugs and/or carpets can trap in all sorts of nasty smells. A good way to get rid of the smell and not just cover it up is to take 1/2 cup(or a cup for larger areas) and add in 10 drops(15-20 if you are using a full cup of baking soda)of essential oil and then sprinkle onto your rug or carpet. I personally use Young Living's Purifcation blend for this one as it is awesome at getting rid of odors. Once you have let the baking soda sit on your carpet or rug for 30-60 minutes just vacuum it up and be amazed at how much better your home smells:)

  1. Lastly ditch the candles and diffuse instead. Candles used to be one of my favorite ways to scent my home. As I was starting to cut back on the toxins in my home and learned more about the different toxins candles could release in the air(acetone, benzene and more)I decided to switch to diffusing essential oils instead. I haven't missed having candles as I can recreate my favorite scents using essential oils. The added benefit of diffusing was not only did I cut back on the toxins in my home but I now have all the added emotional support benefits from the oils as well(it may sound hokey to some but don't knock it till you try it) I base what I choose to diffuse based on a mood I want to create that day or what I may be feeling. Some of my favorite combinations are 1. Clary Sage & Lime, 2. Bergamot, Grapefruit and Tangerine, 3. Citrus Fresh, 4. Orange & Vanilla & 5. Lavender & Cedarwood(I diffuse this in my bedroom almost every night. If you are in need of purchasing a diffuser or essential oils, I always recommend Young Living as that is the brand I trust and use in my own home. I hope you give these four freshening ideas a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how nice your home smells:)
